The Department of French in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time continuing teaching stream appointment in French as a Second Language at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, effective July 1st, 2019.
We seek candidates with teaching expertise and pedagogical scholarship in French as a Second Language including extensive knowledge of pedagogical content development, curriculum design, innovative methods and approaches for French language teaching, and theories and principles of second language learning. Expertise in one or more areas of linguistics taught in the department’s undergraduate program (second language acquisition, formal and experimental linguistics, bilingualism & sociolinguistics) as well as experience with teaching core French language skills for specific purposes (e.g., business, law, health) will be an asset. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching at the university level, a commitment to pedagogical enquiry, curriculum development and teaching innovation as well as an interest in developing a long-term career in teaching and related scholarly activity. S/he will be responsible for courses primarily at the undergraduate level; graduate level teaching may occur depending on departmental needs. In addition to core teaching responsibilities, the position includes coordinating and developing new French language and linguistics or second language pedagogy & learning courses, supervising teaching assistants as well as developing curricular materials and teaching tools.

Applicants must have
1) A PhD in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or Second/Foreign Language Teaching and Learning by the date of application.
2) A record of excellence in teaching.
3) Demonstrated expertise with pedagogical innovation (e.g., hybrid and on-line course delivery, pedagogical technologies, flipped classrooms, data-driven language learning)
4) Experience in language coordination
5) A strong commitment to or experience with language curriculum renewal and pedagogical training for teaching assistants.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to exceptional pedagogical practices will be illustrated through outstanding course evaluations, strong letters of reference from referees endorsing excellent teaching and commitment to pedagogical innovation, and the teaching dossier and teaching statement submitted as part of the application. Candidates must have native or near-native French proficiency and be able to work effectively in English.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

1) A curriculum vitae;
2) A cover letter of no more than two single-spaced pages which includes a description of future pedagogical projects;
3) A teaching dossier with a detailed statement outlining teaching philosophy (maximum two pages), a list of courses taught, course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a proposal for three courses (maximum four pages each): 1) a third-year course for students in the Department’s Minor in French as a Second Language; 2) an advanced on-line course for the Department’s Major in French as a Second Language; and 3) an advanced undergraduate Linguistics course in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise for the Major/Specialist in French Language and French Linguistics or a graduate course in Second Language Teaching and Learning.
4) One writing sample of no more than 30 pages (an article, conference paper or excerpt drawn from a dissertation chapter);
5) Three letters of reference addressed to Professor Alexie Tcheuyap, Chair of the Department of French (dated, signed and on letterhead), at least two of which must speak directly to teaching ability including familiarity with methods and theories of second language teaching and learning. They must be sent directly by the referees under separate cover, preferably in PDF format, to Marjorie Rolando at marjorie.rolando@utoronto.ca (with “French FSL Position” and the applicant’s name in the subject line) by the August 27, 2018 deadline.
