French Syntax

A study of the distribution and relationships of the syntagmatic components of contemporary French; of the structure of simple and complex sentences; of the principles of coordination, subordination and expansion. A brief survey of major theories of syntax (functional, transformational, etc.).

Required text: Brousseau & Roberge, Syntaxe et sémantique du français. (Available via course website)

Assignments and evaluation: Two in-class tests, [2 x 25%] (50%); assignments [2 x 20%] (40%); overall assessment (10%).

The Department takes into account the quality of students' French as one of the criteria in the evaluation of assignments and examinations. A minimum of 20% of the grade will be allocated to this aspect of written assignments.
